Specialties: Environmental Law and Policy, Marine Governance, Science Communication
Chad English leads the David and Lucile Packard Foundation's Science subprogram within the Conservation and Science program. English has spent the last decade working at the intersection of science, policy and communications. Prior to joining the Foundation, he was the Director of Science Policy Outreach at COMPASS, a nonprofit grantee of the Foundation that coaches and connects scientists to help them share their work more effectively. At COMPASS, English directed work to build constructive dialog between scientists and the policy and management communities, innovating new approaches and opportunities to bring scientists and policymakers together in collaboration that drive new thinking and effective approaches to natural resource policy.
Trained as a scientist, English received his Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, studying how the coastal ocean responds to upwelling winds. He moved to Washington, D.C. to serve in a John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. Following his fellowship, English worked for the House Committee on Science on ocean science, natural resource management, science and technology policy and other issues.
