Climate Change

Issues Overview

The Center for Ocean Solutions works to solve the major problems facing the ocean by narrowing the gaps between research communities and people whose decisions affect the health of marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Our work translating research into practical and relevant guidance will lead to healthier marine ecosystems that support thriving coastal communities for current and future generations.

Through its work on climate change, the Center for Ocean Solutions seeks to develop innovative solutions to enhance ecosystem and human community resiliency to climate change impacts.  We also seek to improve the policies governing climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Center develops and executes research, education and communication strategies to achieve these goals.Climate change is expected to have unprecedented impacts on our ocean and coastal systems. The Center works on issues associated with:

  • Sea level rise
  • Ocean acidification
  • Ecosystem shifts
  • Ocean Hypoxia

Ecosystem Health

The Center shapes its work on ocean ecosystem health around a series of cross-cutting issues at the forefront of the ocean sustainability conversation.

Our projects and working groups in this area work on:

  • Addressing stressors in marine and coastal ecosystems while accommodating ocean uses
  • Applying insights from theory and practice to human-natural systems research in order to achieve ecosystem resilience and promote human well-being
  • Providing guidance to address thresholds and performance standards for tracking ecosystem health
  • Synthesizing and translating the science of ecosystem-based management to assist coastal and ocean management

Land-Sea Interactions

The coastal ocean represents the major interface between humans and the marine environment, making coastal ecosystems those most heavily impacted by human activity.

Coastal habitats provide many important services such as sheltering diverse marine organisms, buffering terrestrial habitats from wave action and flooding and supporting recreation and tourism. The Center for Ocean Solutions is taking an interdisciplinary approach to identifying and resolving these challenges. Human impacts on the coastal environment include:

  • Fishing pressure
  • Industrial pollution
  • Habitat modification
  • Agricultural runoff
