Director of Education and Training
Responsibilities
The Director of Education and Training (DET) will be responsible for implementing
activities and creating new programs to achieve COS’ educational mission of improving educational opportunities for both graduate students in the Monterey Bay region and public and private decision makers in the marine realm. The DET will work closely with the Center’s Program Directors and relevant faculty, researchers and collaborators to develop and implement effective outreach and education strategies for each Strategic Initiative. Tasks for this position include:
• Work closely with COS faculty, researchers and collaborators, to facilitate the
development of content for short courses, workshops and trainings for graduate marine education at Stanford and around Monterey Bay associated with each strategic initiative,
• Organize and run an annual or biennial two week intensive graduate student marine policy course,
• Work closely with the Center’s Fellowship Committee to support and maintain a robust and attractive Fellowship and Internship program at the Center,
• Develop attractive, effective and relevant decision-maker training opportunities for
policy, business, and other leaders that help achieve the goals of the Center’s initiatives by collaborating with academic, government and NGO partners such as the University of Queensland, Duke University, NOAA, California OPC, Environmental Defense Fund and COMPASS,
• Work with the Center’s Program Directors to organize “uncommon dialogues” that help achieve the goals of the Center’s initiatives,
• Identify opportunities for education and outreach in other venues, conferences,
meetings or schools in collaboration with other organizations,
• Coach and train scientists, staff and PIs for briefing and meeting with decision-makers from government, industry and NGO communities.
• Organize and run the Center’s monthly marine policy seminar.
• Organize and run the Center’s semi-annual internal “talk fest.”
• Organize and run the Center’s semi-monthly journal club.
• Collaborate with and provide strategic advice to the Center’s Fisheries Sustainability and Leadership Forum Co-Director.
Requirements
• A Master’s or PhD in related field.
• Experience in developing, coordinating, implementing, facilitating and conducting
education and training programs
• Strong leadership skills and ability to work effectively with staff at many levels as a colleague or supervisor, as well as work successfully with faculty and researchers in developing concepts into programs
• Solid working knowledge of marine environmental issues
• Strong networking and relationship-building skills;
• Ability to work well in partnerships involving a wide variety of organizations and
businesses;
• Outstanding written and verbal communications skills;
• Strong personal initiative, problem solving skills, creativity, and ability to work
independently and as a member of a team;
• Ability to manage several projects/tasks at the same time;
• Collaborative, flexible work style, and self-sufficient.
