In addition to creating knowledge and helping implement better policies, the center will develop future leaders who understand the value of and can succeed at interdisciplinary problem solving. The new ties the Center has forged between educational institutions throughout this region will serve to expand marine curricula, including through a new series of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional "short courses" and "workshops" on specific ocean challenges, problem-solving techniques, and new scientific developments and tools.

The Center will create opportunities for graduate students studying in the natural, physical and social sciences to apply their training to real-world problems and engage in interdisciplinary problem solving by working on our strategic initiatives and projects. The Center for Ocean Solutions Early Career Fellowship program is designed to draw on and enhance the academic and professional skills of early career professionals and researchers by placing them in interdisciplinary collaborations focused on identifying, developing, and implementing enduring solutions to the greatest challenges facing earth’s oceans. For more information about the fellowship program and to learn how to apply for an Early Career Fellowship, click here.

The Center will also draw on the talent at our partner organizations to offer educational programs for public and private decision makers to provide them with an up-to-date understanding of ocean related science, technology, and policy. These programs will allow policymakers to build networks with scientists and other decision makers, and help to hone their problem-solving and negotiation skills.

In this way, the Center will not only develop the leadership and communication skills of students early in their careers, but it will also strive to improve how society tackles ocean related challenges.

Current Programs

The Fisheries Leadership & Sustainability Forum helps members of the U.S. Regional Fisheries Management Councils increase their understanding of fisheries and ocean science, economics and policy. By convening workshops and providing ongoing support throughout the year, the Forum helps participants develop leadership and problem-solving skills and provides important opportunities to share management experiences across regions.

"BY COMBINING TOP SCIENCE TALENT WITH INNOVATIVE POLICY IDEAS, I BELIEVE THE CENTER FOR OCEAN SOLUTIONS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE FRESH INSIGHTS AND PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS TO ACHIEVE HEALTHY OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS FOR THE FUTURE."
