Cumulative Effects in Marine Ecosystems: State of the Science

The coastal ocean borders a dynamic interface between coastal communities and the marine environment. Consequently, near-shore ecosystems are highly susceptible to increased degradation from human activities, and predicting the combined impacts of these activities on coastal environments is extremely challenging. To tackle this challenge, the Center for Ocean Solutions partnered with the WWF-Canada to present a report: “Cumulative Effects in Marine Ecosystems: Scientific Perspectives on its Challenges and Solutions.”

This report is the first to compile the most up-to-date research, understanding, tools and models available to tackle the challenge of cumulative effects. It provides a common language for assessing, planning for, and reducing the cumulative effects of human activity on marine species and ecosystems and makes management relevant recommendations for future research around the challenging issue of cumulative effect assessments.

In conjunction with this report, Center researchers are also working collaboratively to research the legal and practice-based challenges to analyzing cumulative effects.
